Poem 5

 

(From the Sequence "Mizoram 2004")

 

YOUNG MOTHER

And then the young mother,
or perhaps not that young,
has to set the rowdy right.

Sometimes it appears
that the famed compassion
would overwhelm
the bitterness of the curl of the lip

and sometimes it appears
that the churlishness of the child
would engross everything.
