Alwar-Mediaeval & Recent-History Architecture and Market Scene |
There is a noble monument of Chhatri of Moosi Rani, the legendary queen of Alwar who performed sati. There is a fine play of light and shade in the artificial light. The domes have perfect curves, smoothly descend with well-tuned ribs of green. The work of sand-stone is equally fascinating with the leaves of Peepal tree nestling out. I found parrots everywhere. Also pigeons everywhere. Here we find them circling and circling around the lofty around 500 hundred years old dome of Fatehjang. Its arches are pointed, carrying typical Persian patterns and inscriptions. The monument was simple, with spaces of light and shade and no tourist was ever visible. The chowkidar gave us hefty batons to carry to ward off the monkey herds. In the backdrop of the palace is the range of Aravalli hills. When we climb the steep passage of the fort, we find there the crimson flags waving on the top of the temple. On the foot of the hills there is a huge water tank that gets water from the hill-slopes when it rains. Still go down and we come to the bazaar where a hosiery seller sells his goods on carts and it shines brilliantly in the afternoon sun. When I reach the outskirts of the town, the sculptors are busy sculpting the images and I found this fascinating pair of typically Rajasthani husband and wife covered with marble powder and lying in the open as the rejected pieces. It was a wonderful pair. |
